Electrical ideas made clearer

Short answers to the questions we hear most, each linked back to the system it belongs to.

Relays and powerSwitching and protection

What does a relay click actually prove?

It shows the coil received enough current to move the armature. It does not prove the contacts pass full current to the load. Burnt contacts can click perfectly and still deliver nothing. See relay failure patterns.

Why does a fuse blow again after replacement?

A repeat blow means too much current is still flowing, usually from a short to ground, a seized motor or a failing component. Fitting a larger fuse hides the evidence and removes the protection for the wire.

Can I swap relays between sockets to test them?

Only with relays of identical type, rating and internal suppression. Look-alike relays can contain different diodes or pin layouts.

CircuitsPaths and resistance

What is voltage drop and why measure it?

Voltage drop is the voltage lost across part of a circuit while current flows. Measuring it under load reveals resistance in wires, connectors and grounds that a resistance test may miss. Read more in Circuits.

Why can one bad ground cause many symptoms?

Several circuits and modules may share a ground point. Added resistance there can upset all of them at once, producing symptoms that seem unrelated.

Why do some sensors use a 5 volt reference?

A stable, regulated reference lets the module compare the returned signal against a known value, independent of battery voltage that can swing between cranking and charging.

Networks and diagnosticsMessages and evidence

What is CAN bus?

Controller Area Network is a two-wire network, defined in ISO 11898 and first introduced by Bosch in 1986, that lets control modules share data such as speed and temperature. See Vehicle Signals.

Does a fault code tell me which part to replace?

No. A code describes a condition a module detected. It points to a circuit or system area that still needs testing.

Is a cheap OBD-II reader useful?

It can read generic engine codes and basic live data, a helpful starting point. Many body, chassis and network faults need a more capable tool and the vehicle’s service information.
